Un samedi à Boston
Stefaan était de passage à Boston pour le week-end pour voir un ami. J’ai donc pris le train pour les rejoindre samedi matin à South Station. D’ailleurs petite particularité américaine : il n’y a pas de gare proprement dite, juste un quai et on doit acheter son billet au controleur dans le train. Le reseau ferrovière n’étant pas le moyen de transport favori des américains, la quantité de train par jour est donc réduite au strict minimum, ce qui ne facilite pas les déplacements…
Arrivée à Boston nous avons donc pu commencer la visite. Cyril ayant déjà vécu dans cette ville cela à facilié les choses. Nous nous sommes donc rendu sur la Freedom Trail : c’est une ligne rouge peinte sur le trottoir longue d’environ 6km elle permet la découverte des principaux monuments de la ville. Fondée en 1630, Boston est l’une des rare ville américaine à avoir gardé de nombreux édifices de l’époque coloniale.

La Freedom Trail commence donc devant la Massachusetts State House. Achevée en 1798 elle possède un dome recouvert d’or, et aurait servie de model lors de la conception du capitol de Washington.
Nous avons ensuite fait un petit détour dans Beacon Hill. C’est un quartier très résidentiel et très chaleureux dans lequel se trouve la maison de John Kerry le sénateur du Massachusetts.

La visite c’est poursuivie par la découverte d’un des plus vieux cimetière de Boston, dans lequel sont enterrés les parents de Benjamin Franklin ainsi que Paul Revere (héro local qui aurait joué un role cruciale lors de la guerre d’indépendance 1775-1783).

En face du cimetière nous avons visité la King’s Chapel. Première église anglicane de la Nouvelle Angleterre, elle a été construite en 1686.

Puis nous nous sommes dirigés vers la mairie qui est absolument affreuse en comparaison à l’ancienne…

Nous avons légerement dévié de la Freedom Trail pour nous balader plus longement dans la Financial area.

Et nous avons retrouvé notre fil d’Ariane devant la Old State House. Construite en 1713 elle est l’un des plus ancien batiment des Etats Unis. C’est de son balcon que fut lue la déclaration d’indépendance en provenance de Philadelphie. Elle abrite maintenant un musée.

Nous sommes ensuite partis en direction du port en passant par Quincy Market : ce sont les anciennes halles de Boston datant de 1826. Elles abritent maintenant de nombreuses boutiques et restaurants.

Sortis du port nous avons marché au-dessus du Big Dig : l’autoroute traversant Boston a été entérée laissant place a une longue avenue verdoyante.

Et nous sommes arrivés dans le quartier italien où nous avons profité du fait qu’il était midi pour manger une pizza.

La statue de John Harvard ou encore nommée la statue des trois mensonges. Le premier : il est marqué que John Harvard est le fondateur de l’université alors qu’il n’est qu’un généreux donnateur ayant permit à l’université de se développer. Le deuxième : ce ne serait pas lui sur la statue, John Harvard étant beaucoup plus vieux lorsqu’il à fait son don. Le sculteur n’ayant pas de model, il aurait créé son propre John Harvard Le troisième : la date marquée sur le seaux est fausse : l’université a été fondée en 1936 et non en 1938 comme indiqué sur la statue. Malgrès tout il parait que lui toucher le bout du pied porterait bonheur… |

Et pour finir cette journée nous sommes allés au Boston Common, parc situé entre Beacon Hill et Financial Area.

Maman canard et ses petits, en l’honneur de Robert McCloskey qui a écrit l’histoire “ Make way for ducklings” qui a rendu célèbre le Boston Common auprès des petits américains.
Respect pour ce magnifique article si bien renseigné sur tous les éléments que nous avons croisés en une journée. Il ne manquerait que les 10aines de StarBucks que nous avons croisés pour parfaire le tableau lol.
Cette journée et pour moi ce week-end a été des plus excellents sur le continent nord-américain, encore merci pour cette balade bostonienne en ta compagnie.
